PNGJE Vol. 42, 2022

Inaugural message from the Editor

It is with great pleasure that I introduce this first-ever online issue of the Papua New Guinea Journal of Education (PNGJE) to the Papua New Guinea (PNG) research community and to the world at large. PNGJE Volume 42, 2022 has been one year in the making, after the journal went into hibernation for more than eight years. On behalf of the PNGJE Editorial Board, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the readership of PNGJE!

The PNG Journal of Education, formerly known as “The South Pacific Journal of Education,” was a paper-based journal for more than five decades. It was first published in April 1963 by the Papua New Guinea Department of Education. I was able to retrieve this information from the archives of the Australian National Library. The responsibility of funding and publishing articles and book reviews in the PNGJE by PNG Department of Education was later shared with the University of Papua New Guinea, University of Goroka and the PNG National Research Institute.

Two major setbacks were encountered (mainly funding issues) which affected the continuity of the paper-based publications. The journal went into hibernation from 2004 - 2013. It was revived in 2014 which saw the publication of Volume 41, Number 1 by the late Editor, Dr. Arnold Kukari. After another eight years of being inactive yet again, the PNG National Research Institute Governing Council took responsibility of the journal’s continuity and hence gave me the task to form a new editorial board which began work on reviving the journal in our first meeting in December 2021.

Since February this year (2022), a sub-committee comprising of Ms Olga Temple from the University of Papua New Guinea (also Editor of Language and Linguistics in Melanesia), Dr. Patricia Paraide (former Editor of the Divine Word University Education Research Journal) and I have been working tirelessly to get this journal up and running online. At this juncture, I wish to formally congratulate the winner of the logo competition Ms Martha Vagilama of the PNG National Research Institute for the professionally designed yellow emblem which the PNGJE now identities itself with.

The topics covered in the PNGJE include but not limited to basic and general education, secondary education, and tertiary education. We welcome contributions as well from other disciplines that are aligned to education with direct relevance to Papua New Guinea.

As an open access peer reviewed journal, the PNGJE (ISSN: 0031-1472) provides an ideal platform for exchange of information among professional and academic audience, policy makers, planners and implementers, teacher educators, and researchers in Papua New Guinea and abroad to publish their research work at their finger-tips unlike the traditional paper-based journal process which took longer to publish.

In closing, I welcome you to reading the first ever articles and book review in this inaugural publication of the Online PNGJE Volume 42, 2022.

Dr. Kilala Devette-Chee
